Note: Was the oldest son of Adam Corn, became a preacher early in life, along
with his father and brothers Alfred and Jesse. They preached to the
Indians and organized churches in western N.C. and north Georgia. They
were known throughout western N.C. as devout Christian people, and of
having been associated with the Baptist denomination. Late in the year of
1860, John Corn and Elijah Kimsey were the 23 delegates from Towns Co. to
the Convention at milledgeville, after Abraham Lincoln had been elected
President, to decide whether or not Georgia should secede from the Union.
They made the trip by horseback; which, there and back, was over 400
miles. both men were opposed to Secession and voted against it. The stood
by Benjamin Hill and Alexander Stephens, who were of like mind. All of
the men from the north Georgia counties voted against Secession. The vote
was about 160 in favor and 130 against it.
At the age of 52 John Corn was ddrafted into the Confederate Army. The
pension records show that he was elected Captain. of Company D, 24th
Regt. of Georgia infantry, June 21, 1861. His Colonel was Robert
McMillan. Thension records also show that in the same year, and same
month, May, 1862, that John Corn resigned and his son, John Heatherly
Corn in his 18th year, volunteered in Co. A. 6th Georgia Cavalry. John H.
served 3 years, or until the close of the War in April 1865.
In the fall of 1874 John Corn was elected Representative of Towns Co.,
Ga., to the State legislature. later on, a trip he made, he took sick and
hed to be brought home where he developed pneumonia, and died after a few
days. The Masonic Order had charge of the funeral.
