McDearmon and others are variations of MacDermot. There are many
different spellings of the name, the most common of which is McDermott.
Originally the name was in Irish and was spelt Mac Diarmada (son of
Diarmuid - Dermot, in English). As those with the name became
anglicised in 16th Century Ireland several English language spellings of
the name
came about. This became even more pronounced in USA as immigrants
passed through Naturalisation points such as Ellis Island or Grosse Isle.
Officials wrote down what they heard (or thought they had heard) and so
McDearmon, McDurmon, McDormand, McDerMott come about.

Clan MacDiarmid
All spellings of the name come from the Gaelic MacDhiarmaid, 'son of
Dermaid', who is one of St Columba's attendants, son of a king of the
Scots, and a Celtic hero. The MacDiarmids claimed to be the oldest
inhabitants of Glenlyon, and many of them enlisted in the company raised
by the Duke of Atholl in 1706. There is a strong representation in
Argyll.
