Corn, James Harvey (b. 19 JUL 1852, d. 21 APR 1941)
Note: Rev.
Grandpa became a licensed preacher in 1881 and ordained in 1882, on
Martin's Creek, NC. He held other pastorates- one at Mobile and mineral
Bluff, GA 1884-1888; Zion Hill, TN in 1885-1893; Liberty and Hopewell,
NC. 1890-1893; Smyrna and Highlandville, 1897-1898 and in Antioch,
Missouri 1899. Then from 1920 until his death he was the minister at
Calvary Baptist Church in Baker, Oregon. His ministry covered a period of
56 years and he baptized more than 600 persons in his service to the
church. He was a member of the Masonic and Odd Fellows Lodges, which also
made him one of the boys. The Masonic Rites were given at his funeral,
and his death was a blot many of the residents of his adopted city and
state: some having known him most of their lives. He was an avid
collector - not of money- but of friends! 'I never had a dollar in my
life, but I'll wager no man ever had more fun than I have had. '
.
The local newspaper in Baker Oregon was more than kind to this dearly
beloved Baptist minister. At the time of his death it reported "he was
generous to a fault and yet seemed to derive more enjoyment from giving
than anything else. he gave his children a sincere peace of mind and did
the same for many of those he knew. His services to the community can
never be reckoned in dollars, it has been said, but they can be reckoned
in "sense".
