LAURENS WOMAN, NEARING CENTRY OF LIFE MARK, RECALLS LINCOLN

Shows a picture of Mrs L.O. Putnam(81) and Mrs. Jane Kemp (98)holding hands with the title of the grand old ladies of Laurens, IA

One of NW Iowa's Most interesting characters is Mrs. phillip Kemp, 98, of Laurens, Iowa, whose store of memories include vivd pictures of Abraham Lincoln's rise from obscurity tot he presidency and of the famous civil war president as a neighbor and a friend. Sharing some of her memories is her daughter, Mrs. L.O. Putnam, 81 years old of Laurens, Iowa, with whom mrs. kemp has lived and whose span of live included the war between the states and later national conflicts.
Although in the twilight of their lives, the two women are Laurens's Grand Old Ladies. They throughly enjoy life and scoff at the thought of retiring.
Why my great-grandmother lived to be 104 years old, Mrs Kemp will tell you and most of my relation lived until they were at least 96 or 98. My Young brother is 92 years old. He lives in Kansas and each year he travels here alone to visit us. He is coming again here next summer.
the 98 year old woman was born in illinois and was married at age 16 and became the mother of 11 children, four of whom died in infancy.
After that there wasn't a death in the family for 50 years then, a son died young at the age of 66 years old.
Recalling her aquaintance with Abraham Lincoln,, Mrs. Kemp described him as one of the homliest looking men she ever saw and one of the kindest also.
My grandfather split rails with Abe who was our neighbor near springfield, IL where i was raised-she recalled.
She also said that lincoln never lost touch of the common people after he became president. He never forgot his old neighbors and friends and often expressed his wishes to come back and visit a spell.
When asked if she thought young folks of today are wilder than those of her generations, Mrs. Kemp replied Landsakes, Yes! There's toomuch skylarking around! and her daughter who also has seen generations of young people come and go nodded her assent.
